We are recruiting Researchers for the Survey on Possibilities for AI Research and Knowledge (SPARK) Study!

SPARK Team

The SPARK study is an ongoing effort led by researchers Annie Maheux and Kaitlyn Burnell at UNC–Chapel Hill and the Winston Center on Technology and Brain Development, and funded by the Hopelab to map the rapidly evolving landscape of youth and AI.

Our goal is to understand what scholars across disciplines know that can guide AI design and policy today, what research is currently underway or planned, and where the field needs targeted support, collaboration, and funding.

This project includes parallel work with youth-led organizations and adolescents themselves to ensure that emerging insights reflect diverse perspectives and lived experiences.

Ready to take part in advancing AI-related research?

What is the goal of the SPARK Study?

This survey invites experts to share their perspectives in three key areas:

  • First, we ask about AI use cases among youth—which uses matter most, and which should be prioritized for future study.
  • Second, we gather information on current or planned research, including methodological approaches and the barriers that limit progress.
  • Third, we focus on AI guardrails, asking what existing knowledge about youth development, psychology, and the brain should inform today’s AI policy, product design, and regulatory decisions.

Your input will directly shape the next phase of this work and help identify opportunities for meaningful investment and collaboration in this emerging field.

How long will the survey take?

The survey takes 10–20 minutes.

Will I be compensated for filling out the survey?

Upon completing the survey, you can enter for a chance to win 1 of 5 $100 gift cards.

Who should I contact if I have additional questions?

If you have any questions, email to connect with UNC Winston Center graduate student, Caitlin Mbuakoto at mbuakoto@unc.edu or contact the PIs directly: amaheux@unc.edu or burnellk@unc.edu.
